Braces Sensation: How New Braces Will Feel

Needless to say, having metal in your mouth will make things feel quite different! From start to finish, braces are an experience, to be sure.

Still, early 2000’s cartoons were perhaps a bit dramatic. After the first month, you’ll likely start to feel like a braces pro – and knowing what to expect can help you get there. Keep reading for a sneak peak at the new sensations that will pave the way for straighter teeth.

Getting Your Braces

To set your braces, your dentist will dry your pearly whites, apply adhesive to the surface of your enamel, center the brackets on each tooth, clasp the wires in place, and trim any excess wire towards the back of your mouth. Already, that sounds like a lot!

Most patients don’t experience discomfort from the placement itself, though you’ll feel some pressure as your dentist works. However, if your teeth tend to be sore after routine cleanings, it might be a good idea to take pain relievers before your appointment.

Your First Week with New Orthodontics

It’s when you return home that things will probably feel strangest. Braces gradually straighten your teeth by applying pressure, and this sensation is usually most pronounced during the first week. Basically, you’ll have to endure some aches and tenderness. Continue to take pain relievers as necessary, and eat soft, squishy foods to give you and your teeth time to adjust. These are good tips to keep in mind for future tightenings as well!

Bracing For Routine Life

As you start to settle back into your routines, chances are you’ll notice some pretty obvious changes in a few everyday activities. For example:

  • Eating can be cumbersome – you’ll realize certain delicacies like to stick to your brackets and wires.
  • Brushing and flossing will be more involved, as you’ll have to put in some extra work to free your orthodontics from food particles.
  • While speaking, you’ll be met with extra bulk and saliva – especially early on in your treatment.

Overall, the word that might come to mind is obstructed. There are, after all, several metal pieces attached to your teeth! It’s sort of like having a shield for your mouth.

Adjustment And Beyond

Don’t worry, though. Eventually, you will get used to this extra layer of orthodontic metal. Eating and talking will start to feel natural again, and while oral hygiene might continue to be somewhat of headache, this too will simply become part of your routine.

What you’ll want to pay attention to is excessive poking or chafing. When wires or brackets consistently harm your mouth, it’s time to call your dentist! Sometimes, all you need is a quick wire readjustment. Whatever the case, your dentist will do their best to ensure your comfort.
