Dentures have help millions of people achieve complete smiles after losing one, many, or all of their teeth, and modern appliances are so comfortable and lifelike that those wearing them often forget that they are there. However, these devices do not last forever and will eventually need to be replaced. Here are a few ways that your dentures may be telling you that it’s time to see your dentist about getting a new set.

How Do Dentures Lose Their Fit?

Each set of dentures is meticulously crafted to fit the patient’s mouth comfortably and restore a significant amount of chewing force. However, these appliances do not naturally adjust to the changing shape of the mouth, so it’s important to have them adjusted or relined by a qualified dentist as needed so they can work well and fit comfortably. Eventually, your dentures will need to be replaced altogether.

How Can I Tell if My Dentures Need Replacement?

While only a qualified dentist can make the final call as to whether your dentures need to be replaced, there are a few signs that you’re ready for a new restoration you might notice on your own. A few of these include:

  • Your dentures sliding about on your gums: A well-fitting set of dentures will hold its place in the mouth by suction alone. A poorly fitting pair may shift upon the gums, which can cause soft tissue irritation or damage to the remaining natural teeth.
  • Difficulty speaking or eating: If your dentures are not securely seated on your gums, they may make it difficult to speak clearly or chew properly as they shift out of place.
  • Discomfort: Having to wear an uncomfortable pair of dentures can diminish your quality of life, which is reason enough to replace the appliance.
  • Discoloration: You may become less confident in your smile if the teeth of your dentures are no longer aesthetically pleasing.
  • Damage: If your dentures have chipped or loose teeth, broken bases, or other visible damage, see your dentist to have the problem addressed.

If your dentures are no longer working properly, your dentist may recommend repairs, relines, or replacement. In some minor cases of appliances not fitting properly, they may recommend experimenting with denture adhesives to help them stay in place.

Your dentures serve to preserve your appearance, oral health, and quality of life. With excellent care and maintenance, your appliance can last for up to twelve years before needing replacement.
