How Do All-on-4 Implants Work?
As implied by the name, All-on-4 allows us to replace a full row of teeth with just four dental implants. When the implant posts are surgically placed in the jaw, they will be inserted at specific angles; this lets them join with the areas of the jaw that have higher bone density, which can make it less likely that you will need to have bone grafting performed. A full denture will eventually be anchored to the implant posts with the help of metal connector pieces called abutments.
Am I a Candidate for All-on-4 Implants?
All-on-4 is meant to help replace an entire row of missing teeth. The procedure requires less jawbone density than traditional dental implant treatments, which is why it can often make bone grafting unnecessary.
You may be able to consider All-on-4 if:
- Your mouth is generally in good health.
- You don’t have any health complications that would prevent you from undergoing oral surgery.
- You are in a position where you will be able to properly care for your dental implants once they have been inserted into your jaw.
Benefits of All-on-4 Implants
Because dental implants mimic the roots of your natural teeth, they have many distinct advantages over traditional bridges and dentures. Not only do they offer better chewing power and stability, but they can also help stop bone loss in your jaw. Additionally, since your dentures will be permanently anchored to your implant posts, you can care for them as if they were natural teeth by brushing and flossing. And of course, there’s the confidence that comes with a lifelike new smile that doesn’t slip at unwanted moments.
All-On-4 vs. Traditional Implants
All-on-4 isn’t completely unlike more traditional dental implant procedures. However, there are a few important differences that patients should be aware of.
- As many as eight traditionally placed dental implants may be needed to support a full denture. All-on-4 does the same job with fewer implant posts, thus requiring less surgery.
- With traditional dental implants, you may require bone grafting, which can extend your treatment plan. However, this often isn’t an issue with All-on-4.
- Sometimes, patients undergoing All-on-4 can receive dentures on the same day that they have their dental implants placed.
